Design of the lay-out of the Schiphol tower

The Schiphol tower consists of two parts. From the upper ring the Dutch Air Traffic Control (LVNL) takes care of the traffic control for aviation. In the second ring several parties watch over all other platform movement such as (freight) car and all other special vehicles and pedestrians. The LVNL wants to carry out a large number of technical renewals in the eight workplaces of the air-traffic controllers. As a consequence, eight displays of several formats need to be installed on each workstation. Two of these displays are very large and must be controlled with a light-emitting pen. In the current situation four displays are used in combination with a large number of other control and information presenting devices. Such a large adaptation is only possible if the workplaces are also entirely renewed. The LVNL has asked vhp ergonomics to accompany the ergonomic aspects of the reconstruction. This means that in all phases of the project designs must be assessed on several aspects such as handiness, cooperation, reach distances and visibility lines. An interesting and elevated project, literally and figuratively, also for vhp ergonomics.
