Description:

In 2003 a transport company decided to upgrade its camera supervision. This decision was made as a result of an extension of stations which considerably increases the number of cameras to be monitored. vhp ergonomics was asked to make a plan for the way the cameras can be monitored best and to develop this plan in:

  • A layout of the observation room
  • A design of the furniture
  • Operating software for selection and operation of the cameras.

The different camera pictures of the stations are observed with the aim to improve social security. When someone identifies an incident the companies own security organisation or the police force are brought in. The total number of cameras is large. Many cameras are aimed at so-called ‘hotspots’. strategic positions that are useful to monitor regularly. To be able to observe these hotspots frequently and in a logical manner a total view has been developed. In this view the layout of the monitors and the operating software have been geared to each other in an optimal way. On both workplaces a display wall consisting of ten monitors has been placed on some distance from the table. Because of this the operator has a good overview on all monitors. The two workplaces have been placed next to each other in an arc to stimulate cooperation. The observing strategy has been further developed. All cameras have been classified in groups or presets so they can be placed in groups on the display wall. Also the position of every camera on the display wall has been determined in such a way that the position on the wall corresponds as much as possible with the position in the outside world. This view on operating the system is specified in the operating software. that enables the cameras and camera groups to be selected from a plan. The layout was further developed in technical drawings. By means of these drawings a furniture maker has realised new furniture. The employees are very pleased with the new workplace and working method.
